The park's meadows, wooded ridges and creek valleys give it more variety than most leaf-peeping spots near Philadelphia. The rebuilt huts and the granite Arch, set against orange trees, also make it one of the best places in the region for autumn photos.
Below: when to go, the trails with the best colour, the trolley's last autumn dates, a half-day plan, and how to get there from the city. Entry is free. For getting there by car, bus or tour, see our Philadelphia to Valley Forge guide.
The quick answer
The state forestry service puts the most colour in south-eastern Pennsylvania between 20 and 31 October, and its late-October report listed Montgomery County as approaching peak. The best trails for colour are the hilly, wooded Mount Joy and Mount Misery trails, with the paved Joseph Plumb Martin Trail for an easier loop. The trolley runs weekends until 22 November.
When do the leaves peak at Valley Forge?
In the last days of October, with good colour into the first half of November. Hickories, maples and birches turn first.
Pennsylvania's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says the south-east, which includes Valley Forge, has the most colour from 20 to 31 October. Its fourth weekly report of the season listed Montgomery, Chester and Philadelphia counties as approaching peak, with hickories, maples and birches showing the most. Oaks hold their browns and reds later, so the woods on the ridges stay warm-toned after the meadows fade.
Light matters as much as the date. Clocks go back on 1 November, and sunset falls from about 6 PM to about 5 PM overnight. The grounds close 30 minutes after sunset, so a November visit wants an early start.

Which Valley Forge trails are best for fall colour?
Mount Joy and Mount Misery for the woods and views, Valley Creek for a level walk, and the paved Joseph Plumb Martin Trail for the classic loop past the huts and the Arch.
The park has about 30 miles of trails. Mount Joy and Mount Misery rise on either side of Valley Creek, and both have steep, wooded climbs with long views over the colour. The Valley Creek Trail runs flat beside the water below them. For the history and the foliage in one go, the Joseph Plumb Martin Trail loops around the Grand Parade and follows much of the Encampment Tour route.
Check the trail notices before you go. Parts of the Grand Parade Trail close briefly during meadow restoration work, and the lot at the Maurice Stephens House is shut for building work, so the park suggests parking at the Chapel lot and crossing Route 23 at the pedestrian crossing.
| Trail | Terrain | Why go in autumn |
|---|---|---|
| Joseph Plumb Martin Trail | Paved and hilly; 8.7 miles, with a 5-mile inner loop | Huts, the Arch and the Grand Parade framed by colour |
| Mount Joy trails | Unpaved, hilly, wooded | Hillside woods and long views |
| Mount Misery Trail | Unpaved, steep, wooded | Dense woods above Valley Creek |
| Valley Creek Trail | Unpaved, mostly level | Creekside trees, easy walking |
| Chapel Trail | Unpaved and shady; 2.5 miles one way | Views of the Schuylkill River |

Does the Valley Forge trolley run in the fall?
Yes. Weekends at 11 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM until 31 October, then weekends at 12 PM and 2 PM until 22 November, weather permitting.
The trolley is a 90-minute guided ride along the Encampment Tour loop, with long stops at the huts and, until the restoration closure, Washington's Headquarters. Washington's Headquarters and its surrounding area are closed for restoration until 2027, so ask at the store how that stop runs for now. Tickets cost $24 for adults, $22 for students, seniors 62+ and military, and $14 for children 11 and under.
The Encampment Store sells them by phone on 610-624-5010, and booking ahead is recommended on peak weekends. Collect tickets 30 minutes before, because unclaimed seats go five minutes before departure. There is an extra midweek run on Veterans Day, Wednesday 11 November.

How do you spend an autumn half day at Valley Forge?
Start at the Visitor Center at 9 AM, walk the huts and the Arch by late morning, hike one wooded trail after lunch, and leave the loop's far end for the golden light.
The free 19-minute film runs on the half hour from 9:30 AM and is the best 19 minutes of context you can get. Then drive or walk to Muhlenberg's Brigade, step inside the huts, and carry on to the National Memorial Arch. After lunch, pick Mount Joy or the Valley Creek Trail for the leaves, and finish at the Steuben statue on the Grand Parade, where the low sun lights the meadow.
A few seasonal extras help. Varnum's Picnic Area is open weekends through November. The Encampment Store rents bikes in season, and the park asks you to call 610-551-7870 first. The last fall campfire talk of the year, Tales of the Mad Prussian, is on Saturday 7 November at 7 PM at the fire pit by the huts.

Yes, above all without a car. The park is spread over a 10-mile loop, and a guide gets you to the best stops and back to the city in an afternoon.
The Valley Forge half-day tour leaves from 48 N 12th St and takes 4 hours 30 minutes, from $149, with the round trip, a guide and a donation to the park. Daniel, on a September tour, wrote that "the pace was good for our group of mostly 60+ participants - not rushed but efficient from site to site." Martin, in October, said his guide James "made the information fun to learn."
For more time at the viewpoints, the private Valley Forge tour is $745 per group, picks you up anywhere in Philadelphia, and covers parking. It can stop wherever the colour is best. Both tours cancel free up to 24 hours before, which helps when the forecast turns.
