How long to spend at Valley Forge

Most visitors need two to four hours at Valley Forge. That covers the film, the huts, the arch and Washington's Headquarters; walkers and cyclists can fill a whole day on about 30 miles of trails.

The park is big, about 3,500 acres of meadow, woods and two small mountains, Mount Joy and Mount Misery. The sights you came for sit along one road, the 10-mile Encampment Tour with nine numbered stops, and how long you stay depends on how often you get out of the car.

Below are three plans that work, the loop stop by stop with time to allow at each, and what changes if you come with a guide from Philadelphia.

The quick answer

Allow 2 to 3 hours to drive the Encampment Tour with stops at the Visitor Center, Muhlenberg's Brigade, the National Memorial Arch and Washington's Headquarters. The loop alone takes about 20 minutes without leaving the car and up to 2 hours with every stop. Add a morning on the trails for a full day. From Philadelphia, the guided half-day tour takes 4 hours 30 minutes door to door.

How long does it take to tour Valley Forge?

Two to four hours for most people. The National Park Service says the loop takes 20 minutes from the car and up to 2 hours with stops, and the Visitor Center adds about an hour.

The 19-minute film and the exhibit are the best hour you can spend here, because they explain what you are looking at outside. After that, the time goes on the huts, the arch and the headquarters. Most people stop at four or five of the nine stops and drive past the rest.

Guests on the half-day tour from Philadelphia say the pace works. Daniel wrote that it was "not rushed but efficient from site to site" for a group of mostly over-60s (Sep 2026).

What are the stops on the Valley Forge Encampment Tour?

Nine stops on a 10-mile loop, from the Visitor Center to Washington Memorial Chapel. Numbered yellow, green and black signs mark the way.

Pick up the free brochure map at any stop and follow the blue line. You can also dial the free cell phone guide on 484-396-1018 and key in the stop number, or buy the Audio Tour from The Encampment Store. All nine stops are wheelchair accessible. Times below are our suggestions for a visit with short walks.

Can you see Valley Forge in one hour?

Yes, if you drive. Watch the film at the Visitor Center, then drive to Muhlenberg's Brigade and the National Memorial Arch, which are both close by.

One hour gets you the story and two of the big images: the rows of huts on the outer line and the arch on the rise beyond them. Washington's Headquarters sits at the far end of the loop by the Schuylkill River, but the house and its surrounding area are closed for restoration until 2027, so for now an hour goes further at the huts and the arch.

Short on time and without a car? The private tour collects you in Philadelphia and focuses on what you most want to see.

What does a half-day at Valley Forge look like?

Three to four hours lets you do the whole loop properly, with time at Washington's Headquarters and a walk on the Grand Parade.

  1. Visitor Center (9:30 AM): the first film of the day and the exhibit.
  2. Muhlenberg's Brigade: walk among the huts and look out over the ground the army defended.
  3. National Memorial Arch and the Wayne Statue: photo stops on the way north.
  4. Washington's Headquarters: the stone house where Washington, his aides and household lived and worked, closed with its surrounding area for restoration until 2027; take the digital tour on the park's website instead.
  5. Redoubt 3, Artillery Park and the Von Steuben Statue: the inner line and the parade ground where the army learned to drill.
  6. Washington Memorial Chapel: a look inside, and coffee at the Cabin Shop.

This is close to the shape of the guided half-day tour, which adds the drive from Philadelphia and a guide who tells the story at each stop.

How long is the walk around Valley Forge?

The paved Joseph Plumb Martin Trail is the main walking loop. The National Park Service lists it at 8.7 miles in all, with a 5-mile inner loop.

The trail is named after a Continental private who wrote a memoir of the war, and it links the huts, the arch, the headquarters and the Grand Parade, mostly beside the loop road. On foot, the inner loop takes two to three hours with stops.

  • River Trail: 3 miles one way along the Schuylkill, unpaved.
  • Chapel Trail: 2.5 miles one way, unpaved.
  • Commissary Trail: 1 mile one way round part of the Pawling Farm.
  • Mount Joy and Mount Misery: wooded climbs with the park's quieter paths, and the Horse-Shoe Trail heading off west toward the Appalachian Trail.

The paved loop suits walkers, runners and cyclists.

Can you bike around Valley Forge?

Yes. The park has 18.2 miles of trails open to bikes, and The Encampment Store rents bikes in season.

The paved Joseph Plumb Martin Trail is the obvious ride, and the Schuylkill River Trail brings cyclists in from outside the park over Sullivan's Bridge at Betzwood. Call 610-551-7870 to check that rentals are running before you go. In 2026 the park runs the '78 Mile Challenge from April to October, for walking, running, biking or paddling 78 miles in the park.

Is a full day at Valley Forge too long?

Not if you like walking. A full day lets you do the loop in the morning and a trail or the riverside in the afternoon.

Pack lunch: the Visitor Center has snacks and the Chapel Cabin Shop sells food and drink, but there is no full restaurant on the loop. King of Prussia, just outside the park, has plenty. Varnum's Picnic Area opens from April to October, and weekends in November.

The park grounds, roads and trails open every day of the year from 7 AM until 30 minutes after sunset. The Visitor Center at Valley Forge opens daily from 9 AM to 5 PM and closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
